I am a PhD candidate (thesis approved; defense 5-OCT), MSc (1997) and BSc (1993) in Computer Sciences; I am carrying out research in the fields of AI (agent-based computing), Distributed Computing (grids and cloud computing), mHealth and mobile services. Moreover, I have over 17 years experience in the IT industry with background in Telecomm and mobile computing. I am a Principal System Engineer at Openwave Systems since 2008.

Academic

The "Academia" pages contain detailed information.

My research interests are:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Agents: related to my PhD research; researching on architectures and methods for building intelligent mobile services using agent-based technology;  I run the 2APL-M Project.
  • Distributed Computing: interested on the applicability, integration, management and simulation in Grid and Cloud Computing.
  • Telemedicine and mHealth: interested on the use of  distributed and mobile computing technology for health services. I collaborate to a Microsoft funded project of the Nossal Institute for Global Health, University of Melbourne, titled: "Cell Phone Applications for Clinical Diagnostic Therapeutic and Public Health".
  • Simulation: I have an emerging interest in the area of Computer Simulation in two specific areas:
    1. social theory, with agent-based simulations to model how people behave in the mobile sphere and mobile internet usage habits, and:
    2. distributed computing, looking for ways to create realistic, component oriented, highly distributed and dynamic  wired/wireless computer network simulations.

I am also involved with academic activities, research groups and projects at University of Melbourne, Utrecht University and Federal University of Santa Catarina.

My list of publications is here.

Personal

In a nutshell, I was born in Brazil, from German and Italian grand-parents in 1971.  I lived in Brazil until 1998. One day I decided to leave a safe job in the public service and get a job abroad -- in the USA, in the good, old Y2K plethora days. Thanks to that fortunate decision, my IT background, willing  academic life, and dynamic temperament I travelled a lot!

Since I can remember I have always been mending things to figure out how they work. It was obvious then that I would end up in some sort of science or engineering related program.

Moreover, I cultivate good reading habit. Experiences, books and an active traveling life contribute to form my view of the world, people, science, technology, society and things.
